Rufus turned one on Wednesday. My little woofer turned a whole one and he’s no longer a puppy. I feel like one of those parents where they have a mini breakdown over their kids age. But alas, you just need to accept it and carry on.
So, to celebrate my little hounds birthday, I decided to make him a dog friendly cake. It was a quick and easy recipe and it can always be used as an every day treat too. Not to mention, it’s natural ingredients. We never really know what goes into main stream dog treats, so, sometimes it’s good to go back to basics and make your own.
I baked Rufus a peanut butter and carrot birthday cake. It only takes a few ingredients and is cooked in 30 minutes. I based it off a couple of websites and sort of just went with it and created my own. The thing with dog cakes – you need to go on what your dog loves the most. Rufus loves peanut butter in his kong and is a lover of carrots – raw or cooked! So, it seemed to make sense to go with this:
Ingredients for 1 small pooch cake
55g of peanut butter
1 carrot grated
150 grams of plain white flour
1 tsp of vanilla essence
1 tsp of baking powder
To start, as always, I greased my dish with butter, so, it’s always easy to get the cake out. I pop the oven on at gas mark 4 to preheat.
Then I combined my egg, peanut butter and vanilla essence together until it’s a smooth paste. I then add the grated carrot into it and fold it into the mixture.
I finally gradually fold the flour and baking powder into the mixture and once it’s fully combined, I spoon the mixture into my baking tin and pop it into the oven for 30 minutes.
Once cooked, I let it cool and then it’s ready to serve your pooch friend!
If you’re wanting to make them more into biscuits for your hound, get some dog themed cookie cutters and bake some biscuits of ’em! They’d love them and would be super handy to have around to keep your dog occupied!
