The sunnier weather is coming out way and I, for one, can’t wait to start wearing maxi skirts, sandals and going for walks without donning my scarf and gloves. For a girl who really loves Autumn, I’m slowly falling back in love with Spring and finding the new season bringing a refresh into my life. With spring approaching also comes Bodega‘s new Spring menu. Bodega is a South American restaurant that serves the most delicious food and cocktails; it’s always been one of my favourite places in Birmingham to stuff my face with tacos and burritos. When I was invited to try out their new menu, I was like um yes you can hook a girl up!
Located up Bennetts Hill (just off New Street), it tucked away but the restaurant has so much life to it. It’s full of large, colourful prints and has a bar area downstairs called The Sugar Loaf, with a more chilled out and more comfy vibe.
Greeted by bloggers and nachos, it was lovely catching up with fellow Birmingham bloggers. It’s a wonderful community that grown with West Midlands bloggers and I always love seeing friendly faces and meeting new ones. I always leave Birmingham events feeling a little bit more inspired and wanting to take over the world a little bit more. So, thanks guys.
I got to try a number of different things off the menus. One of my favourites was the Dr Pepper Pulled Pork tacos served with coleslaw, lettuce and coriander. The pork fell apart in your mouth and it was wonderfully sweet. The Dr Pepper taste wasn’t too overpowering and tortillas were beautifully soft. They were served in the cutest taco trays – Instagramable, mess free and easy to maneuver. Each serving comes with 4 tacos and it’s priced at £6.25.
Bodega let us try their new Plantain salad which was full of plantain, avocado, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, pomegranate seeds and lime. It’s not something I would usually go for whilst eating out at a place like Bodega but it was pretty tasty. I had never tried plantain before this and it was a nice thing to fill a salad with. The salad would go well with nachos followed by some of Bodega’s sweet potato fries.
Not only do Bodega do delicious South American food but they make some pretty banging cocktails too. We were greeted with their new blueberry & elderflower margarita. Tequila is one of those drinks where you either love it or hate it and I’m one of those people who hate it. I’ve had too many bad nights on tequila but mixed with the elderflower cordial and orange liquor, it was refreshing and you could barely taste the tequila. For tequila haters, it was a winner from me!
My favourite cocktails of the night was the very summery Royale Sangria. Swap the red wine for prossecco, apple juice, sparkling white wine and passionfruit and you’ve got the best summer cocktail. Royale Sangria is the dangerous drink where it doesn’t taste of alcohol and it’s ridiculously moreish. It’s the perfect drink for sitting outside with your pals, catching up and eating wonderful food. On our table, it was an absolute winner and we easily got through the 2 pitchers between us. A pitcher costs £22.50 and yes I am going to attempt to make it from home for our Eurovision Party in a few weeks time.
The final cocktail of the night was their Mezcal Gin & Tonic. I’m a huge gin fan; it’s my go to drink and I was pretty excited to try it. But, it wasn’t for me unfortunately. Mezcal gin is a mix between tequila and gin, but for me I could taste the tequila too much. It was smokey – a lot like a whiskey really. It’s one of those drinks you love or hate!
Will I be back? Most definitely. Bodega is a Birmingham gem and I always recommend it to friends visiting Birmingham. If you do go make sure you book as it’s one of those places that is always super busy! If you don’t fancy trekking out, you can get some of their grub on Deliveroo too!
*I was invited by Bodega to try out their new spring menu free of charge. All thoughts on wonderful tacos and cocktails are my own.
