How can you be in love with a city you’ve never set foot in?
New York first came onto my radar when I was ten years old and, unfortunately, it’s when I witnessed the city and the world in mourning. It was 11th September 2001 and I watched, as did the rest of the world, the World Trade Centre tumble down. Even at 10 years old, I was heartbroken at what I was watching. People dying, calling their loved ones with their last goodbyes and also people trying to save others. New York was a city that was crushed but was still full of love and that thought has always stayed with me.
I watched the programmes every year in September where we remembered the horrors of the event. I fell even deeper for New York as I started to understand what happened when I was ten. I watched everyone’s bravery; New York survive and rebuild into what it is now. It was remarkable to watch the city overcome evil and still remain full of love. To me, despite it’s tragedies, it’s my city of love and positivity.
My desire became stronger as I became hooked watching Gossip Girl and How I Met Your Mother. If you haven’t watched them I suggest you get on Netflix and spend the next 6 months doing so. They are my favourites, especially How I Met Your Mother. The Geek and I spent a good six months continuously watching them and becoming invested in our new friends. As well as wanting to have the show’s friendships, we wanted to be in New York. I want nothing more than to walk the spots where Blair and Chuck got married in Central Park and the rooftop where Barney proposed to Robin. I want to find the best burger like Marshall. I want to sit on the steps with my frozen yoghurt like Blair and Serena. I want to be in the city where the fictional characters I invested so much time in lived and created their lives.
New York hasn’t always been a pipe dream. The Geek and I have both been close to going, but never close enough. The Geek is still waiting on a trip where his Dad said he’d take him and his sister when they graduated Uni (I’m looking at you JT). When I went on my Trek America trip I planned to visit New York afterwards but after my Mum and the Geek said they wouldn’t sleep due to my lack of direction, I thought I’d save them the panic and just come home from LA. You’d have thought that playing Spider Man 2 on the PS2 for months, I’d know my way round New York.
With life getting in the way, it’s not as easy as popping on a plane and living my dream. With the economic climate being crap and The Geek’s job situation not being the most positive – holidays pretending to be Blair Waldorf aren’t feasible. Luckily, the guys at Icelolly are running a competition to win £1,000 towards your dream holiday and getting a beautiful Olympus Pen E-PL7. I’ve been lusting over one of those badboys for a while and to actually own one would make me constantly be the heart eyed emoji. Not to mention it would up my photography game massively and I could take some fabulous photos of my happy place.
Seriously, it makes my heart ache. I mean, I’ve carried over a week of annual leave for the past 2 years that is widely known by my work colleagues as the ‘Emergency New York week’. I know one day I will get there and it’ll be worth it all. I’ll be able to be my inner Blair Waldorf and drink at the Empire with the man I love. Most of all, I’ll be able to pay my respects to the city that captured my heart.
I nominate Sarah from Things Sarah Loves, Reni from Ms Mistry and Anna from Northener Down South to try and win their dream holidays to a destination of their choice (and bag that gorgeous camera). Good luck gals!
