If I had to compare the Geek and I to any fictional couple, we would be Lily and Marshall from How I Met Your Mother. Why? Mostly for our love of board games nights and making couple friends. For the past couple of years, we’ve hosted a lot of board games nights at our house which means our board game collection has got pretty insane. We’re actually running out of room on where to store them. If you can hit a girl up with some storage ideas, let me know!
What does a board game night consist of in the Blogger & The Geek household? In short, we buy lots of snacks, drink lots of booze and play board games with our friends. I’m talking nibble bowls full of nuts, kettle chips on tap and having a standard sociable Dominos. As well as it being a night of fun, it’s cheaper than a night out and a hell of a lot warmer than battling the winter weather.
But what games are the best ones to play? It’s pretty standard that Monopoly ends with someone never speaking to another person again. So, what can you play other than Monopoly or a standard game of Scrabble? We’ve built up quite the collection and here are my favourite ones to play
This was a Christmas purchase and one that is now a fim favourite in our household. It’s named one of the best games and even won an award of Game of the Century. Players assume the role of settlers and have to make settlements on the board, which is the island of Catan. You need to trade and spend resources to develop settlements and gain victory points. The first person to gain 10 victory points is the winner. The best bit about this game that the board is set up differently each time and there’s enough expansion packs to develop it even further
The English graduate in me loves this game – being able to write up bullshit descriptions and get away with it. Players read out a phrase based on a number of different categories. The other player writes out a description and tries to make it the most believable. The ‘dasher’ reads out all the answers given, including the correct one, and the players have to guess which one is the correct one.
I only recently played this game – it’s an 80’s classic where you play the board game along to a DVD or VHS. We have the VHS copy but use Youtube for the video content. It’s a timed game where you need to collect all coloured keys and face your fear to the win. But, the video content is where the Gatekeeper is hosting but appears with a number of different challenges for each character. As time ticks on, it gets pretty tense and crazy!
This is the board game that’s taken over our house. Like, it’s all over our conservatory. It’s one of my favourites and you’ll find that it’s played ALL the time on The Big Bang Theory. Talisman is a fantasy board game where your character battles 3 regions to battle in the Crown of Command. The last one standing in the Crown of Command is the winner. Each character has different strengths and weaknesses. It’s definitely one of my favourite games but be warned – a standard game of Talisman can take up your whole board games night!
The card game for horrible people. A game that you don’t play if you’re easily offended. It’s a simple game where you simple fill in the blanks of a sentence with the cards you’ve got. However, the cards you have tend to be politically incorrect, racist or offensive. But, it’s a funny game and a lot of fun! My recommendation would be to play it after a few glasses of wine: it’s not a board games night starter. It’s the end of the night oh god we’re horrible humans who’ve drunk too much red wine kinda game.
Another Fantasy Flight game that will take over your entire board games night. I’m talking that one game takes easily 4 hours. Based on the HBO series the object of the game is to simply become King or Queen of the seven kingdoms. It’s a game based on a tactics, there’s a lot of scheming to be done and keeping your guard up. It can create the same fall outs as Monopoly but it’s a must for any Game of Thrones fan.
The quick fire, fast, shout out the answers game. One of the perfect ways to start off a board game night or to play whilst you are waiting for the sociable Dominos. The aim of the game is to answer 4 questions and work out the link between them. You shout out Linkee and get a letter. The first person to be able to spell out Linkee wins the game – simple!
This is the game that I’m unbeatable at. I’m the Queen of Taboo. It’s another super quick game where one player is timed to describe an object on a card, but without using 5 taboo words. The other player needs to be able to guess the word and the one with the most cards wins. Again, time it with your take out or to start off a board games night to ease everyone in.
This one is a little different – it’s one where everyone has to work together. in order to eradicate 4 diseases spread so they don’t wipe out the world. It’s a lot of fun, and it adds a bit of a different dynamic. There’s even 3 expansion packs that switches up the game.
I’m not usually a fan of Trivial Pursuit but I’m all over Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit. The only downside is that it’s based on the films, but, for any Harry Potter fan it’s the best8. IT’S EVERYTHING.
