A few weeks ago, we headed into Birmingham for a date night. Living only a 20 minute train ride from Birmingham, I always forget how in reach the city is from our house.
Battling the elements of the Beast from the East, we were invited to try out Bodega Cantina on Bennetts Hill in Birmingham. It worked out perfectly us having just gone to an engagement party across the road. Bodegas embraces South American vibes and has a friendly, zaney atmosphere through out. It’s a colourful and bright place, and you can’t help but feed off it’s positive energy.
Armed with a Mojito and a Brum Runner, a delicious rum based cocktail full of tropical flavours, we decided to take on the menu with our Mexican inspired dishes.
We went for the House Nachos to start – which has always been one of my firm favourites at Bodegas. Coming topped with your usual dips, you get a sizeable portion between 2 people and they are a great size for scooping up all the dip. A must when you’re a nacho fiend like me.
Burritos are always my go to – they are one of my favourite meals and you can never go wrong with them. I went for the beef chilli with dark chocolate burritos and it was a winner. As always from Bodegas, it was a good blend of spice – a little kick but not burning your mouth off. Stuffed with a good proportion of rice, beans, meat and cheese. Ant opted for the Quesadillas with chicken. Again, the plate soon became empty but it didn’t seem to be as well proportioned as the burrito. Of course, we shared a bowl of the sweet potato fries. Though, I’m a standard chip girl through and through, Bodegas sweet potato fries always seem to be a must on our food order.
As always, it was a delicious meal washed down by some fruity cocktails. Brum Runner was a definite new favourite of ours – extremely fruity and made us dream about our honeymoon in the not so distance future, whilst the Beast from the East was still going full pelt outside. Bodegas will always be one of our favourite go-to restaurants in the city centre where I’m always guaranteed a good, tasty meal at a reasonable price and some very good cocktails.
